Lunchlecture on climate collaboration

14/05/2024

Kornelia recently gave a lunch lecture at PBL, discussing the collaboration between designers and climate scientists as part of the “Collaborations for Future” program. She presented initial findings on how these interdisciplinary partnerships can effectively address climate challenges.

During her lecture at PBL, Kornelia explored the potential of combining creative and scientific expertise to tackle climate issues. “Collaborations for Future” is a program that pairs 10 designers with 10 climate scientists for nine months, without setting specific goals or outcomes. This approach allows participants to freely explore collaboration methods and develop innovative solutions for climate action.

One notable collaboration involves Willie Vogel and Frederike Arp. They focused on understanding the climate significance of material flow, specifically sand, and aimed to communicate its importance through diverse representations. Their goal is to influence policymakers, designers, architects, developers, and material producers by making the climate implications of sand more tangible and comprehensible.

The program emphasizes the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration, aiming to produce insights and tools that can be utilized by various climate and design institutions. As Kornelia highlighted, this initiative seeks to address immediate climate challenges and aims to transform how the creative and scientific sectors collaborate for a sustainable future
