In this third Unexpected Encounter, we will discuss with filmmakers, photographers, and image editors on the topic “How do we see climate change?”. Alongside Marsha Simon, we will engage in conversation with, among others, Gideon Levy, Christian Clauwers and Veerle van Herk.

Christian Clauwers is a Belgian photographer and explorer who focuses on documenting scientific research and the relationship between humans and nature, following extensive exploration of over 114 countries across all continents, transitioning from a career in communications management to dedicating his life to inspiring action against climate change through documentary photography. Veerle van Herk has been working as a visual editor at De Correspondent since 2023. She devises visual interpretations of stories from correspondents and connects them with the work of visual artists, or commissions work herself. She studied illustration at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and Arts & Society at Utrecht University. Gideon Levy is a Dutch filmmaker and producer. He has spent four years following climate scientists working for the US government. We will discuss what it’s like to work for a government that ignored, denied, and criticised science.

During the discussion, we will explore the role of each of them in framing, positioning, and visualising the climate, and how this influences shaping our collective perception of the future on this planet. What does climate change look like through the lens of a photographer? How can we make it visible, even when it’s as small as carbon particles in the atmosphere and as vast as the entire planet?
